Fitbit said to be close to buying Pebble

A major deal between two well-known wearable companies may be in the works.

Fitbit is reportedly close to buying Pebble. The deal is currently in the closing stages, says Financial Times, with Fitbit paying a “low price” for Pebble. Sources speaking to The Information echo this report.

It’s unclear when the deal might be completed, but when it is, it’s expected that many Pebble employees will make the jump to Fitbit. However, production of future Pebble smartwatches “is in doubt.”

Pebble made a name for itself in 2012 when the Kickstarter for its first smartwatch earned $10.2 million. Since then, we’ve seen Pebble smartwatches hit major retailers and Pebble has released several new devices, but the company never seemed to gain a ton of traction with the general public. Plus, Pebble has been facing stiff competition from the likes of the Apple Watch and Google’s Android Wear platform, both of which come from much larger companies.

Stay tuned for more on this news as we get it.

Android Pay comes to New Zealand, but only for one bank card

Android Pay is finally coming to New Zealand, but it’s starting off pretty limited. The service is only compatible with the Bank of New Zealand, and only the BNZ Flexi Debit Visa card.

If you have this card, then you’ll be able to install the app and add your card. From there you’ll be able to pay at stores like McDonalds, Dominos, Burger Fuel, and more. It’s a neat trick, though it’s no replacement for a wallet until it becomes more widespread. Hopefully more banks will get on board as well.

OnePlus 3 now has Nougat beta available to flash

The time has come for adventurous OnePlus 3 owners. OnePlus has released a beta build that’s built on Android 7.0 Nougat for the OP3 and you can download it right now.

Unfortunately, there will be no OTA for beta users. You’re going to have to flash the Nougat update yourself, and there will be no flashing back without wiping data. And of course there’s always the fact that it’s a beta, and so it won’t be fully stable and will have bugs (like Android Pay potentially not working and performance issues). Here’s a full changelog:

  • Upgraded to Android 7.0 Nougat
  • New Notifications Design
  • New Settings Menu Design
  • Multi-Window View
  • Notification Direct Reply
  • Custom DPI Support
  • Added Status Bar Icon Options
  • Added Quick Launch For 3rd Party Applications
  • Improved Shelf Customization

If you want to give it a shot, hit the source link to download the build. Don’t forget to leave feedback and make the software better for everyone!

Motorola will likely create a Tango Moto Mod for the Moto Z

Motorola CEO, Aymar de Lencquesaing, today announced that the company is looking into creating a Tango Moto Mod for the company’s flagship Moto Z smartphone. de Lencquesaing said the following about the compay’s plans:

The tablet folks did a phablet and worked with Google, the Tango team, to come out with a Tango phablet. Going forward, we'll have to address as a group how do we reconcile the products that are at the fringe? We're likely to to have a Tango module to basically enable the Z to have Tango functionality.Aymar de LencquesaingMotorola

Lenovo has become the first manufacturer to create a Tango smartphone for consumers with the Phab 2 Pro. Now that the device has successfully launched, Lenovo is looking for ways to move from that point with Tango. Utilizing its Motorola brand is a natural springboard, bringing the technology within reach of the vast amounts of customers who use Motorola products. With the power of the Moto Mod system, Lenovo can likely integrate Tango technology into a mod for the current flagship, rather than creating an entirely new device.

While this Moto Mod is currently still in the conceptual phase, we expect it to come into being in a short span of time. We’ll keep you posted on the progress of this Mod.

American Express launches Amex Pay in Canada

Yet another mobile payment system has emerged, this time in Canada. American Express has launched Amex Pay, an NFC mobile payment system built into the Amex CA app for Android.

This mobile payment system is similar to what Android Pay and Apple Pay offer. You connect your card, tap the phone to a compatible scanner, and you can pay. However, since it’s all American Express, there are a few perks over other services.

Once you link your card, you can pay with the card even if you lose the physical card. When your replacement card arrives, you do not have to add it again as it’s connected via a Device Card Number rather than the physical card info.

If you’re Canadian and have an Amex card, give the app and Amex Pay a shot. If you’re in the US, you can always add your Amex card to Android Pay and use that.

Netflix adds offline playback for TV shows and movies

Netflix has been rumored to be launching offline playback for quite awhile now, and today the company finally made it a reality.

Netflix has announced that offline playback is available for its customers for Android and iOS on any streaming plan. There is a brand new download button that will pop up on content that’s available to download so that you can avoid consuming data on road trips or prepare a movie for a long airplane ride. That includes TV shows as well as movies and documentaries.

As it stands, Netflix’s available content for offline viewing is pretty limited, but they will be expanding availability from here on out. Netflix’s first-party shows and movies are available for offline viewing right out of the gate, but there are also some third-party options as well.

It’s a start, at least.

If you want to see what’s available to download, you can select a new option within the updated Netflix app for “Available for Download.” That’ll give you a list of options.

Are you excited for offline viewing in Netflix?

Google improving fake review detection on Play Store

The Google Play Store is pretty secure, but fake reviews are still a problem (like they are across many services). Google is working hard to improve the review process and has announced that it has improved fake review detection.

Google says that if developers are using an agency to promote their app, that they should make sure the agency adheres to the Google Play Developer Policy, otherwise the reviews might be marked as fraudulent.

Hopefully this renewed effort will cut down on fake reviews that make poor apps look good. There are enough bad apps on the Play Store.

Facebook adds games to Messenger

Facebook Messenger is getting better and better with every major update. Though some dismiss it as another part of Facebook, it has become a very competent and fully-featured messaging app.

The latest update adds an unexpected feature: video games. The chat service is adding games that people can play together, even in group chats. There are plenty of classic titles, like Pac-Man, and newer ones like Words with Friends.

The games will be available for both the iOS and Android apps and will roll out in 30 countries to start. This is definitely an exciting update to the app and I can’t wait to give it a shot. Let us know what you think in the comments!

Vodafone announces Android 7.1.1 update for Nexus 6P

Vodafone has put up a page for the next major software update for the Nexus 6P, and it’s claiming that the update will be Android 7.1.1. The device currently has a developer preview for Android 7.1.1, but this should be the official update.

The update is scheduled to launch on December 6 at 5:00 PM Australian Eastern Standard Time and will include the December 5 security patches from Google. Interestingly, the build is labeled as NMF26F, which is older than the current developer preview. It might be a typo, or Vodafone might be entirely mistaken about the update.

If this is true, it’s a good indication of when all modern Nexus devices will be getting this update. Keep an eye on the calendar!

Save up to 42% on the TP-Link and Asus OnHub smart routers

Quite a few people are waiting for the launch of Google WiFi, but if you live in a small house of apartment, it may be the perfect time to pick up one of the OnHub smart routers.

With pre-orders of Google WiFi set to start shipping in early December, retailers have slashed the prices of the OnHub routers by up to 42%. The TP-Link and Asus OnHub routers sport much of the same functionality as Google WiFi, but they don’t have mesh network capabilities. While that may sound like a huge downgrade, it only matters if you were planning on picking up multiple Google WiFi routers.

If you’re not familiar with the functionality offered by OnHub routers, check out the video below. Those who need the increased coverage offered by Google WiFi’s mesh network can pre-order the three-pack for $299.99

Samsung Galaxy Note 5 getting Grace UX update in South Korea

Grace UX is a new version of TouchWiz that debuted on the Samsung Galaxy Note 7. While that device was troublesome, its user interface was well-received and considered an improvement over Samsung’s previous versions of TouchWiz.

Now the Galaxy Note is getting that new interface. The Note 5 is now receiving an update in South Korea with the new Grace UX in tow, though it’s based on Marshmallow rather than Nougat. Still, a new interface is a big update.

Nougat is still coming to the Note 5, so don’t worry about that. The Grace UX update isn’t a replacement for the latest version of Android. You’re also getting stability improvements and bug fixes with the update. It’s rolling out in stages, so if you own a Note 5 in South Korea, check for updates in Settings > About phone and let us know if you get it!

Samsung Pay on the Gear S3 not working when paired with Pixel

Samsung Pay is a mobile payment service much like Android Pay (though with no need for an NFC terminal, which is a big plus) that’s restricted to Samsung devices. However, one way of getting Samsung Pay without a Samsung phone was to pick up the Samsung Gear S3 smartwatch.

The watch has Samsung Pay support built-in when paired with any device. That is, unless it’s a Google Pixel. For some reason, the payment service won’t work when the watch is paired with a Pixel, even though it works with other non-Samsung devices like the LG V20.

If you’re planning to pick up a Gear S3 specifically for paying for things with your wrist and you own a Pixel, you might want to wait until the issue is fixed (although Samsung claims Pay isn’t compatible with Pixel devices, so it may never be officially fixed).

Unlocked HTC 10 now getting Nougat update in the US

HTC has announced that the unlocked variant of the HTC 10 is now receiving the update to Android 7.0 Nougat in the US. You should now be seeing the update roll out, though like with all rollouts, it might take some time to get to you.

The Nougat update brings lots of new features like an improved Doze mode, better notifications with quick replies, split screen mode, and a lot more. It’s definitely a nice update to an already great device.

If you have an HTC 10, head to Settings > About to check for updates! And if you have a carrier model of the HTC 10 or HTC One M9, you should see your Android 7.0 update early next year.

Flo Smart Thermometer blends technology and health

Hearken back to the days of childhood. You’re at school, you don’t feel well, and so you head to the nurse’s office. Nine times out of 10, one of the first things to happen is the nurse will take your temperature. Depending on the school, the thermometer might vary, but generally it would be an oral or ear thermometer covered by a plastic sheath to prevent transfer of germs.

While accurate, these thermometers are neither pleasant nor efficient. A fever is one of the simplest ways to identify a health issue, yet children hate to have their temperature checked. The thermometers are uncomfortable, and depending on the age or model, may take quite a bit of time to accurately determine the temperature. There are the additional concerns of waste and safety on top of that. Each time a temperature is checked, a new disposable cover is used and then thrown away. As for safety, you simply have to hope that the plastic cover does its job and that contaminants don’t make their way onto the thermometer with a simple cough or sneeze.

Imagine a thermometer that never has to come into contact with the patient. A thermometer that is instant, reliable and beyond simple to use. While such a thermometer may sound like a pipe dream, it’s already in existence, and its name is Flo.

Flo is made by Zeraph and uses infrared and Bluetooth to accomplish its purpose. The device is small and incredibly straightforward, with just a single button and LED indicator. For a quick read, users can simply hold Flo within one inch of the patient’s forehead and the indicator will turn red if the patient has a fever or white if the patient is chilled. If the patient’s temperature is in a normal range, the indicator will turn green.

Flo Smart Thermometer (2)

More features are unlocked using the accompanying app for Android or iOS. Flo easily connects through Bluetooth and an exact temperature reading is available within the app, along with the ability to log temperatures. Users can create different profiles and easily keep a log of temperatures, which is particularly useful when dealing with a chronic issue. Notes and photos can both be added to track additional symptoms that may have accompanied the changed temperature, allowing users to keep a log of symptoms to help their doctor better diagnose the issue.

Flo is geared at parents. The device is small and unintimidating, placing an emphasis on convenience. The battery life is rated for six months, with an easy-to-replace battery. And while Flo is perfect for parents, it could also be used on a larger scale in schools, daycares and other organizations that could benefit from a fast, hygienic thermometer.

After testing Flo, we found the device to deliver on its promises and work even better than expected. If you want a great blend of technology and health at an affordable price, Flo is your device.

Flo is now available for $49.99.
